San Antonio artist creates city’s largest tile mural capturing history of Plaza de Armas


SAN ANTONIO – The group is invited on Nov. 3 to sign up for the City of San Antonio’s Department of Arts & Culture to rejoice the finishing touch of the city’s largest tile mural, Iluminación De La Plaza.

Created through San Antonio artist Christopher Montoya, the muralist and painter drew inspiration for the mural from the history of Plaza de Armas or Military Plaza.

The historical plaza was once established in 1722 as a parade flooring and marketplace sq. for the Spanish squaddies stationed there.

“The plaza, it’s been used for so many things. It was used as a military hub. It evolved to a melting pot of people selling goods. There was dances and music,” Montoya mentioned.

The mural is constituted of greater than 90 folks tiles and is the largest tile mural the dept has finished.

“What you see here started as a painting on canvas,” Montoya mentioned.

The portray was once photographed and despatched to a tile producer in Florida.

The mural is positioned at the construction attached to the Spanish Governor’s Palace this is used as a gallery house and homes town departments.

“One pocket would have been the food and tables. A place to eat and gather. In another pocket it would have been live stock kind of coming in,” Montoya mentioned.

There are a number of key components featured, together with a serape border that surrounds the mural and will pay homage to the colourful clothes repeatedly noticed all over the historical plaza. There could also be a lantern placing within the middle that illuminates the plaza’s history.

Montoya is worked up for the general public mural unveiling at 10 a.m. on Nov. 3.

“I’m just extremely grateful,” Montoya mentioned.
