In 1979, Russell M. Perry started the Perry Publishing Company with it’s first edition Oklahoma City’s The Black Chronicle newspaper.
In 1993, with the purchase of KVSP 1140 AM in Oklahoma City, Perry formed the Perry Publishing & Broadcasting Company, Inc. KVSP AM became the first urban-formatted radio station for Oklahoma City in more than fifteen years.
In 2003, PPBC built a 2,000 ft tower in Caddo County, Oklahoma to move KRPT FM into Oklahoma City making it a Full C in power, a 100,000 watts. KRPT FM call letters were changed to KVSP FM and Oklahoma City had its first Urban FM radio station in more than 15 years.

The Black Chronicle newspaper, a weekly periodical servicing the Oklahoma City metro area’s African American population, has grown into one of the largest paid weekly newspapers in the state of Oklahoma. Currently, The Black Chronicle services the entire state of Oklahoma – (i.e., Tulsa, Lawton/Ft. Sill, and Oklahoma City).
Family Broadcasting was the owner, which also operated KVSP radio. The transmitter/antenna was located in the Foshay Tower, while the studios were located in an adjacent building. At that time, the 447 foot tall Foshay was the tallest structure in Minnesota. Programming was a mix of local talk, music, sports, movies and news. The DuMont Network provided national programming. A young Harry Reasoner was hired as News Director, and reported that the station’s highest rating happened the day the Democratic Party bought up time on the three major stations to broadcast a speech by Adlai Stevenson. Viewers tuned him out by the score, and Reasoner said that KVSP’s film on water safety was a big hit that night. Sports programming was an important part of the broadcast schedule. Minneapolis Millers and St. Paul Saints baseball, Lakers basketball and pro wrestling found their way to the channel 9 airwaves. Some days the engineering remote crew would do a baseball game from Nicollet Field in the afternoon and wrestling matches from the Minneapolis Auditorium later that evening.

What we believe
We ground our reporting in basic facts about the world we live in:
- that the failure of capitalism to deliver on either shared prosperity or ecological sustainability is an essential backdrop to stories about the political economy of our time.
- that you cannot provide rigorous journalism in a North American context without acknowledging and challenging the historical legacy and continuing existence of racialized violence and dispossession.
- that, while a nuanced and fact-based approach to geopolitical conflict is necessary, such reporting must be grounded in a recognition of the disastrous consequences of US efforts to achieve and maintain its global hegemonic status.
