Red Sox interested in long-term extensions for young players, including Triston Casas and Brayan Bello

The Boston Red Sox have now not but recognized their subsequent best baseball operations government after pushing aside Chaim Bloom close to the top of the season, but they will have already recognized their best offseason precedence. According to Red Sox group president and CEO Sam Kennedy, the membership intends to be competitive this iciness in signing their very best young avid gamers to long-term extensions.

“I think it’s really important. I think the best organizations really go out of their way to try and shore up the players that they feel that they have real strong conviction in,” Kennedy said during an appearance on MassLive’s Fenway Rundown podcast. “That effort has absolutely been there. In certain instances, we haven’t yet done that. We were able to make a deal with Garrett Whitlock, for example, along those lines. And there’s been conversations with other guys.

“We must be capable of decide which avid gamers would qualify for longer-term extensions, whether or not it is Bello, whether or not it is Abreu, whether or not it is Duran or Casas. These are in reality essential selections that our baseball operations folks need to make.”

It should not register as a surprise that the Red Sox (or any team, for that matter) want to sign long-term deals with young players. MLB’s pay structure is slanted in a way that gives players their lowest earning potential (and therefore the least leverage) early on in their careers. In other words, the first few seasons of a player’s big-league stay is usually when teams can get the “very best deal” for themselves and, in flip, the worst deal for the participant.

What is notable this is that Kennedy explicitly named a number of avid gamers, including right-handed pitcher Brayan Bello, first baseman Tristan Casas, and outfielders Jarren Duran and Wilyer Abreu. Perhaps Kennedy was once simply damn off the primary young avid gamers that got here to thoughts, or most likely that is a sign that the ones 4 avid gamers in specific shall be extension applicants.

This is natural conjecture on our phase, however it could additionally make some sense for the Red Sox to analyze long-term extensions with best possibilities like shortstop Marcelo Mayer and outfielder Roman Anthony. Although neither has debuted in the majors, groups have grown extra relaxed in fresh years signing avid gamers to long extensions earlier than they have reached The Show.

The Red Sox went 78-84 in 2023, completing remaining in the American League East for a 2nd consecutive 12 months and the 5th time in the remaining 10 seasons.
