Police officer, man with assault-style weapon fatally shot in Detroit



DETROIT — A Detroit police officer and a man wielding an assault-style weapon had been fatally shot on the town’s west aspect Wednesday night time, Detroit police Chief James White stated.

White stated the officer and his accomplice responded about 7:30 p.m. Wednesday to a name of a man firing a weapon. He stated when the officers arrived, they had been met by the man, who was armed with an assault-style weapon and firing in their path.

White stated one officer was struck and his accomplice returned hearth, fatally putting the man. The struck officer was later pronounced lifeless at a hospital.

“With a heavy heart … I have to inform our department and our community that we lost one of our heroes today,” White instructed reporters outdoors the hospital. “A very sad and tragic event.”

The officer killed was not instantly recognized however White stated he was a five-year veteran with the division and “comes from a long history of law enforcement officers.” White stated the officer’s father just lately retired from the division.

“The officers are heartbroken,” White stated.
