PESCADERO, Calif. (AP) — A fast-thinking custodian safely confined a mountain lion in an empty classroom after it entered a Northern California highschool Wednesday morning, authorities mentioned.

The custodian was opening Pescadero High for the college day when the juvenile cougar was noticed, mentioned Detective Javier Acosta with the San Mateo County Sheriff’s Office. No college students or academics have been on campus on the time, Acosta mentioned.

“The mountain lion casually walked through campus and decided to go into an English classroom,” he mentioned. “The custodian acted quickly and managed to shut the door behind it.”

Acosta mentioned the animal, estimated to be about 40 kilos (18 kilos), appeared “lost and scared.”

The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service was referred to as to humanely take away the large cat and return it to its pure habitat, officers mentioned.

Pescadero is a small coastal group about 35 miles (56 kilometers) south of San Francisco.
