Trump’s comments risk tainting jury pool in federal election subversion case, special counsel says



WASHINGTON – Justice Department special counsel Jack Smith warned Tuesday that former President Donald Trump’s “daily” statements threaten to taint a jury pool in Washington in the felony case charging him with scheming to overturn the results of the 2020 presidential election.

Trump’s provocative comments about each Smith’s crew and U.S. District Judge Tanya Chutkan — who’s presiding over the case — had been a central factor because the indictment was once filed final month. Prosecutors have time and again signaled their issues concerning the affect of Trump’s social media posts and Chutkan explicitly cautioned towards inflammatory remarks from Trump that might intimidate witnesses or contaminate doable jurors.

The posts endured Tuesday each prior to and after the most recent fear flared, with Trump previous in the day circulating a New York Post tale about Chutkan on his Truth Social platform and overtly mocking the concept she might be truthful in his case. Trump faces 3 different prosecutions but even so the federal election subversion case. He’s charged with 18 other people in a state case in Atlanta with plotting to overturn the result of the 2020 election in Georgia; faces federal charges from Smith accusing him of illegally hoarding classified documents; and is accused in New York of falsifying business records in reference to a hush cash fee to a porn actor.
