SA groups push to break stigma of suicide among Black, Hispanic communities during Suicide Prevention Month


SAN ANTONIO – September is Suicide Prevention Month. As this month ends, suicide prevention advocates throughout San Antonio are speaking about psychological well being, particularly for veterans and racial minorities.

Larissa Martinez is the chief director of Circle of Arms, a bunch devoted to psychological well being consciousness, and he or she stated this month she’s making conversations about psychological well being a concern.

“We can only break the stigma and bring an awareness as much as we can keep talking,” Martinez stated.

Martinez informed she tries to stay the dialog going throughout the year, however this month she informed she prioritized veterans and other people of colour as a result of “there’s still a lot of work that needs to be done.”

“It’s so important to not only just spread awareness, but to know the resources that are out there,” Martinez stated.

Greg Watson, a LivingWorks ASIST teacher who teaches suicide consciousness and prevention, stated his task is to lend a hand other people to find the sources they want.

“It’s a matter of taking advantage of being in 2023,” Watson stated. “There are so many different demographics that have their own struggles and have their own needs. And there are so many organizations rising up to meet those needs.”

Watson stated training courses, counseling sessions and the 9-8-8 hotline are some of the ones sources. He stated all of it comes down to having direct and transparent conversations about psychological well being.
