CYPRESS, Calif. (AP) — Snowbirds are a typical sight in Southern California in wintertime — besides after they’re really a chicken. A snowy owl to be exact.

Crowds of birdwatchers have been displaying up repeatedly in an Orange County neighborhood to gawk at a snowy owl, a species usually discovered across the Arctic, Canada and several other northern U.S. states.

Its present house is a rooftop perch in the balmy metropolis of Cypress.

“It is absolutely unique as a bird observation,” Vic Leipzig, who teaches birding at Saddleback College, informed The Orange County Register this week.

The newspaper reported that native chicken consultants speculated that the owl might have arrived in Southern California aboard a ship or might be a captive chicken that escaped.

“It’s a beautiful thing to see,” Leipzig stated. “That there were so many people standing there watching this thing was very thrilling to me.”
