Police identify 34-year-old man officers fatally shot in Homestead



HOMESTEAD, Fla. – Relatives reported a 34-year-old Homestead resident’s mom requested for lend a hand to take him to rehab ahead of a deadly police capturing on Saturday in the Sunrise neighborhood.

The Homestead Police Department recognized him as Leandro Chong. Relatives recognized him as Leandro Francisco Ledea Chong. Neighbors knew him as any individual who ceaselessly talked to himself.

On a GoFundMe page, Luisa Delvals and Karen Jam described Chong “as an amazing stepfather and an amazing husband” who “suffered from a mental health disorder.”

Police officers reported they feared Chong used to be a danger at his area throughout a standoff. Chong threw items at them and positioned his arms inside of a fanny pack, police mentioned.

Delvas and Jam reported all Chong had in his fanny pack had been his keys, a rehab brochure, and a screwdriver, after his mom, Katia Chong, who has Lupus, known as 911 for lend a hand to get him to rehab.

“He agreed but then the cops showed up all pointing weapons at him knowing that they have [dealt] with one of his episodes in the past as he had another episode,” they wrote.

Homestead police officers mentioned the placement deteriorated, so that they requested the Miami-Dade Police Department’s SWAT crew for lend a hand alongside the Sunrise Boulevard circle, close to Northeast Fifth Street and Southwest 162 Avenue.

“They shot him outside of his house as he ran inside of fear to the bathroom to grab something to help the bleeding,” they wrote. “He ran to his room dragging his body and running and they shot him to death in his room leaving him deceased.”

After the capturing, Florida Department of Law Enforcement investigators replied. Delvas and Jam declare to have “video evidence … showing how he was fighting for his life and how he bleed out.”

Police officers reported responding to Chong’s area previous this week. Records display Chong had additionally been arrested on Oct. 14, 2023, and Sept. 18, 2023.
