Passenger With No Flight Experience Lands Plane In Palm Beach After Pilot Suffers Medical Emergency – CBS Miami


WEST PALM BEACH (CBSMiami/CNN) – What would you do? You’re on a small aircraft and your pilot has a medical emergency and is unable to fly the aircraft.

It occurred Tuesday afternoon when a passenger, with no flying expertise,  safely landed a single-engine Cessna 208 when the pilot turned incapacitated.

As the state of affairs unfolded, the passenger may be heard telling air site visitors management that he doesn’t know how one can fly the aircraft, in accordance with LiveATC.web

“I’ve got a serious situation here,” the unidentified passenger stated within the audio. “My pilot has gone incoherent, and I have no idea how to fly the airplane.”

Then an air site visitors controller started offering the passenger with directions on touchdown the aircraft. That air site visitors controller, Robert Morgan, simply occurred to be a flight teacher. He stated he was on a break when he obtained the decision {that a} passenger was flying the aircraft.

“I knew the plane was flying like any other plane, I just knew I had to keep him calm, point him to the runway, and tell him how to reduce the power so he could descend to land,” stated Morgan.

“Try to hold the wings level and see if you can start descending for me. Push forward on the controls and descend at a very slow rate,” Morgan could possibly be heard telling the person.

“Try to follow the coast either north or southbound. We’re trying to locate you.”

They ultimately touched down safely at Palm Beach International Airport.

In further audio captured by LiveATC.web, one other air site visitors controller may be heard telling different planes what had unfolded.

“You just witnessed a couple of passengers land that plane,” the tower operator may be heard telling an American Airlines pilot ready to take off for Charlotte, North Carolina.

“Did you say the passengers landed the airplane?” the American Airlines pilot requested. “Oh, my God. Great job,” he stated.

The FAA is investigating.
