The Oklahoma Sports Hall of Fame unveiled the expansion of the Jim Thorpe Museum Thursday. The new area permits for the show of Thorpe’s Sac and Fox heritage, his childhood, Olympic accomplishments, in addition to different facets of his skilled profession. “Hopefully, everyone from the state of Oklahoma and across the world can experience and get to know more about Oklahoma’s and the world’s greatest athlete, Jim Thorpe,” said James Kossakowski, Jim Thorpe’s great-grandson. The expansion of the Hall of Fame took nearly a year to complete. Construction started in February 2022, and finished in November. The project was made possible through private donations, raising nearly $265,000 in individual contributions. The family described Thorpe’s story as one of strength, wonder and resiliency that vibrates over generations. “When we talked about a way that we could honor Jim Thorpe as never before, this is what we had in mind,” Kossakowski stated. The 750-square-foot expansion will probably be open to the general public free of cost beginning on Jan. 13.
