Oklahoma OC Jeff Lebby ‘betting-line favorite’ to join Nick Saban’s Alabama staff, per report

Alabama seeks new offensive coordinator after Bill O’Brien left for a job with the New England Patriots. Reporter Pete Thamel stated on the ESPN College Gameday podcast Oklahoma offensive coordinator Jeff Lebby may very well be a reputation to watch within the Crimson Tide’s seek for their subsequent offensive coordinator.

Jeff Lebby has been a popular name,” Thamel said this week. “The former coordinator for Lane Kiffin at Ole Miss, he’s clearly been within the Baylor system. … He’s an Oklahoma grad, whether or not Nick (Saban) can extract him from his alma mater could be an attention-grabbing subplot. Say that Lebby is the betting line favourite proper now.

“The query is what does Nick need to do and the way does he need to do it. Does he need it sooner? Probably. And then how briskly would you like to go? Do you need to attempt to flip into what Lane has turned Ole Miss into? I don’t suppose Alabama went fairly that quick when he was there. … There are another names which were (thrown) round, a bunch from the NFL aspect that Nick hasn’t been afraid to go to through the years.”

Lebby agreed to a three-year, $5.7 million take care of the Sooners in 2022, in accordance to paperwork launched by Oklahoma in response to an open-records request by The Oklahoman and USA TODAY Sports. He made $1.8 million this past season, with annual increases of $100,000 each of the next two seasons.

Lebby spent the last two seasons as the offensive coordinator at Ole Miss, guiding one of the nation’s fastest offensive units under coach Lane Kiffin. He graduated from Oklahoma in 2007 and began his coaching career as a student assistant with the Sooners. Baylor was Lebby’s first major collegiate job, as he was brought on in 2008 as an offensive analyst before earning a promotion to running backs coach four years later.

Lebby joined the Victoria (Texas) Memorial High School staff in 2007. He spent one year at the school before joining Art Briles’ staff at Baylor in 2008 — Briles is Lebby’s father-in-law — and stayed in Waco through the 2016 season, which was the team’s first after Briles was fired amid fallout from the Pepper Hamilton report. Lebby held a number of roles during his time with the Bears, who produced a Heisman winner in Robert Griffin III and captured a pair of Big 12 titles in that stretch.

After one year as the offensive coordinator at Southeastern in 2017, Lebby joined the staff at UCF as the Knights’ quarterback coach in 2018. Offensive coordinator duties were added to his role in 2019, which was his last year in Orlando before joining Kiffin’s staff in Oxford.
