ANNAPOLIS, Md. — A building on the U.S. Naval Academy that had been named after a frontrunner within the Confederate Navy was renamed Friday in honor of former President Jimmy Carter, who graduated from the academy in 1946.
The determination to rename the engineering building in Annapolis was made after a fee mandated by Congress decided a number of army belongings throughout all branches of the service needed to be renamed due to Confederate ties.
The building that had been referred to as Maury Hall was constructed and named within the early 1900s after Matthew Fontaine Maury, a naval officer and scientist who joined the Confederates.
The Naval Academy superintendent’s home and a close-by highway are named after Franklin Buchanan, the academy’s first superintendent who left to affix the Confederate Navy firstly of the Civil War. The academy is also renaming the home and highway, however has but to announce these modifications.
Carter, who’s 98, was president from 1977 to 1981. He didn’t attend the ceremony, although a few of his kinfolk did.
