Mike Pence subpoenaed by Trump special counsel in crime probe


  • Former Vice President Mike Pence has been issued a subpoena by Jack Smith, the special counsel overseeing prison investigations of ex-President Donald Trump.
  • One of these probes is concentrated on Trump’s efforts to overturn his loss in the 2020 election to President Joe Biden, which included his pressuring of Pence to refuse to certify Electoral College outcomes.
  • The Jan. 6, 2021, Capitol riot by Trump supporters disrupted the joint session of Congress that confirmed Biden’s victory.
  • Smith can also be investigating Trump for his removing of White House paperwork and their cargo to his Mar-a-Lago membership when he left workplace.

Former Vice President Mike Pence has been issued a subpoena by the special counsel overseeing prison investigations of ex-President Donald Trump, considered one of which is concentrated on Trump’s efforts to overturn the outcomes of the 2020 election, NBC News confirmed Thursday night.

Pence, who served beneath Trump, was pressured by him to refuse to simply accept the certifications of the Electoral College slates of a number of states that gave President Joe Biden his margin of victory in the 2020 race.

Pence didn’t agree with Trump’s request when he presided over a joint session of Congress that confirmed Biden’s victory.

That joint session on Jan. 6, 2021, was interrupted for hours by a mob of Trump supporters who stormed the U.S. Capitol, sending Pence and members of Congress fleeing to cover from the invaders. Trump refused for hours to behave on requests that he publicly name on his supporters to depart the Capitol.

ABC News first reported that special counsel Jack Smith had subpoenaed Pence. ABC additionally reported that the subpoena was issued after months of negotiations between federal prosecutors and Pence’s authorized workforce.

It was not clear whether or not Smith is looking for Pence’s testimony, paperwork, or each.

Spokesmen for each Pence and Smith declined to touch upon the subpoena.

Smith beforehand issued a subpoena looking for paperwork from Georgia Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger, whom Trump had pressured in early 2021 to “find” him sufficient votes in that state to beat his poll deficit to Biden there.

Smith can also be investigating Trump for eradicating White House paperwork, lots of which had been categorised, and delivery them to his Mar-a-Lago membership in Palm Beach, Florida, the place he has lived since leaving workplace.

Smith was appointed special counsel by Attorney General Merrick Garland after Trump declared his candidacy for the 2024 Republican presidential nomination.
