Measure would require Atlanta gas stations have surveillance cameras | Georgia

(The Center Square) — An Atlanta City Council committee has signed off on a measure requiring gas stations to have surveillance cameras, an offer proponents say will stay citizens protected.

With the thumbs up from the Public Safety and Legal Administration Committee, the whole town council will imagine the measure at its Aug. 7 assembly, a town reliable showed to The Center Square.

The measure applies to gas stations and comfort shops hooked up to gas stations and used to be caused by means of an uptick in automotive thefts and violence at stations within the town. It is very similar to one the DeKalb County Board of Commissioners approved closing 12 months and went into impact on June 30.

“Requiring surveillance cameras at gas stations and convenience stores will be a strong deterrent to potential criminals,” Post 3 At-Large Council member Keisha Sean Waites stated in a remark. “They will know their actions are being recorded and monitored, which will make it a safer environment for customers and employees.

“These cameras can be utilized to observe daily operations, establish troublesome areas, and assist us improve public protection all the way through town,” Waites said.

The measure requires gas stations “to put in a continuing video recording gadget devoted to every gas pump,” which must operate “throughout all hours wherein such established order is opened for industry.” Also, establishments must have a backup system if the primary system “turns into inoperable.”
