“Back to the basics.” That’s the motto Thursday nights on USF’s campus—as younger and outdated study the ins and outs of English as a part of their immigration journey.
And it is all because of a nonprofit known as “NICERFL.”
“I’m an immigrant myself and I always thought I can give back to my community. And I knew how many hurdles new immigrants have to overcome,” stated Dr. Maya Lane.
Dr. Lane began the group two years in the past to assist our nation’s latest residents get adjusted. And since then, she says they’ve helped greater than 100 individuals from many nations get a greater grasp of the language.
They’re individuals like Zanna, who moved right here from Belarus 5 years in the past.
“I’m 62 years old and I am [a] very, very difficult [student]. But I study English every day, every day,” she laughed.
They’re additionally individuals like Misha, who moved to the u-s from Ukraine two weeks in the past and is studying English alongside his grandkids.
“He’s going to work driving cars. So he needs to communicate with people,” he stated with the assistance of a translator.
These days, Dr. Lane says they’re seeing increasingly more college students coming from Ukraine, and to assist with the inflow they want extra volunteers, partnerships, and donations from the group.
And as they wait, she tells ABC Action News they maintain house for the ache typically hiding inside the eagerness to study.
“They are very humble, they’re not complaining, but they come from [a] very difficult situation. Very,” she stated.
