NORMAN, Okla. – University of Houston Women’s Golf freshman Maelynn Kim fired a 4-under 66 to steer the Cougars and tie for 2d following the First Round of the Schooner Fall Classic at Belmar Golf Club on Saturday afternoon.
As a staff, #20 Houston posted a rating of 6-under 274 and stood in 2d, 4 strokes at the back of first-day chief Wake Forest. Virginia Tech stood in 3rd at 280 with Tulsa (281), Iowa State (283), host Oklahoma (284), Kansas State (284), Purdue (284), North Texas (284) and Oklahoma State (284) finishing the Top 10.
Schools will play 18 holes on a daily basis with the Final Round beginning Monday morning.
Competing in handiest her 2d collegiate match, Kim tired 5 birdies with just one bogey to steer the Cougars. Starting off No. 1, she briefly moved beneath par with back-to-back birdies on Nos. 2-3.
The Katy, Texas, local and Seven Lakes High School product continued her lone bogey of the day at No. 7 and regained the stroke with a birdie at the subsequent gap.
She began her again 9 with 3 immediately pars after which tired a couple of birdies in a two-hole stretch at Nos. 13-15 to complete with a 66.
Sophomore and 2023 All-Conference performer joined Kim beneath par with a 67. She loved her first birdie of the day at No. 2 and fought thru a bogey at No. 5 to make eagle-3 at the par-5 12th gap. The Halmstad, Sweden, local loved birdies on No. 15 and No. 17 for a 67.
Sophomore Alexa Saldana posted an even-par 70 and was once tied for 16th whilst senior Nicole Abelar was once tied for 23rd at 71. Freshman Ellen Yates was once tied for 45th at 73 whilst junior Hyeonji Kang, enjoying as a person, was once tied for 57th at 74.
Wake Forest’s Carolina Lopez Chacarra held the person lead with a 63. Kim joined TCU’s Lois Lau in a tie for 2d whilst Svedenskiold joined Tess Blair (Iowa State), Haley Vargas (Kansas State) and Morgan Ketchum (Virginia Tech) in a tie for fourth.
