OKLAHOMA CITY (KFOR) – Agents with the Oklahoma Bureau of Narcotics say a multi-agency investigation has led to a historic drug bust.
In July, investigators started focusing on a drug trafficking operation that was transferring massive portions of meth from Mexico into central and southern Oklahoma.
“The investigation led to search warrants being served this week at several locations where shipments of meth were being stored upon arrival in Oklahoma,” stated Mark Woodward, spokesman for the Oklahoma Bureau of Narcotics.
“The concerning aspect is just how much these groups are moving at any given time and how easy it appears to be for them,” stated Woodward. “It’s significant because meth continues to be our number one killer in the state of Oklahoma.”
Officials have been in a position to seize 589 kilos of methamphetamine with a road worth of almost $3 million.
“The significance of this seizure cannot be overstated as meth continues to kill more Oklahomans than any other drug. This seizure of nearly 270 kilos of meth no doubt saved countless lives throughout our state,” stated OBN Director Donnie Anderson.
Woodward says this bust is one of the largest meth seizures in state history.
“It’s very concerning. 15 years ago, these same groups were moving an ounce to maybe a pound or 5 pounds at a time. Now it is becoming more standard to see these groups moving 25 to 50 to 100 pounds into the United States simply to feed our appetite.”
Authorities additionally seized 4 firearms, and made 5 arrests.
“We believe these people are responsible for a lot more than this. And so this is just one phase of this investigation,” stated Woodward. “And we do anticipate this continuing to go as far as we can take it to identify everybody involved in this trafficking organization.”
“We do believe there’s going to be additional arrests.” stated Woodward.
