In a US first, California will pilot solar-panel canopies over canals

In March 2021, Electrek reported that scientists revealed a feasibility research about the advantages of erecting photo voltaic panels over canals. That research is about to grow to be a actuality when a pilot mission breaks floor in California.

Solar over canals

August 26 replace: Project Nexus within the Turlock Irrigation District, a $20 million mission funded by the State of California, will break floor in mid-October at two places:

  • A mile-long canal span within the close by metropolis of Ceres

Josh Weimer, Turlock Water & Power’s exterior affairs supervisor, mentioned [via Reuters]:

If that is one thing that works on these first two miles of Project Nexus that we’re doing, there’s the potential that this might scale to a number of places.

If all 4,000 miles of California’s canals have been coated with photo voltaic panels, that would produce 13 gigawatts of renewable energy. A gigawatt is sufficient to energy 750,000 properties, so that may be sufficient energy for 9.75 million households. For perspective, as of July 2021, there have been 13.1 million households in California.

March 1: The California Department of Water Resources, utility firm Turlock Irrigation District (TID), Marin County, California-based water and vitality mission developer Solar AquaGrid, and The University of California, Merced, are partnering on Project Nexus – a “nod to the water-energy nexus paradigm gaining attention among public utilities.”

India already has photo voltaic panels over canals, however the mile-long Project Nexus in California’s San Joaquin Valley will be the primary of its sort within the US.

TID explains what the pilot is:

Project Nexus contains the set up of photo voltaic panel canopies over varied sections of Turlock Irrigation District’s (TID) irrigation canals. Project Nexus will function a Proof of Concept to pilot and additional research photo voltaic over canal design, deployment, and co-benefits on behalf of the State of California utilizing TID infrastructure and electrical grid entry.

The mission is anticipated to interrupt floor in fall 2022 and be full by the top of 2024.

Project Nexus will present the chance to see whether or not the photo voltaic panels scale back water evaporation as the results of noon shade and wind mitigation; create enhancements to water high quality by means of
decreased vegetative development; scale back canal upkeep as a results of decreased vegetative development; and
after all, generate renewable electrical energy.

Roger Bales, distinguished professor of engineering on the University of California, Merced, who’s engaged on this mission, wrote in the Conversation:

Most of California’s rain and snow falls north of Sacramento throughout the winter, whereas 80% of its water use occurs in Southern California, principally in summer season. That’s why canals snake throughout the state – it’s the biggest such system on the earth. We estimate that about 1-2% of the water they carry is misplaced to evaporation below the new California solar.

In a 2021 research, we confirmed that overlaying all 4,000 miles of California’s canals with photo voltaic panels would save more than 65 billion gallons of water annually by decreasing evaporation. That’s sufficient to irrigate 50,000 acres of farmland or meet the residential water wants of greater than 2 million folks. By concentrating photo voltaic installations on land that’s already getting used, as an alternative of constructing them on undeveloped land, this method would assist California meet its sustainable administration objectives for each water and land assets.
