A former U.S. Army sergeant used to be arrested Friday on the San Francisco airport and indicted on fees that he unlawfully retained classified information and tried to ship it to China’s safety services and products, the Justice Department introduced.
Joseph Daniel Schmidt, 29, served as an energetic responsibility soldier between 2015 and 2020 along with his number one task at Joint Base Lewis-McChord in Washington state, prosecutors mentioned. Two months after leaving the Army, he traveled to Hong Kong after he had allegedly reached out to China’s consulate in Turkey and later without delay to China’s safety services and products providing classified information, in accordance to the observation.
While in Hong Kong, he persevered his efforts to cross classified intelligence to the Chinese and “allegedly retained a device that allows for access to secure military computer networks and offered the device to Chinese authorities to assist them in efforts to gain access to such networks,” the Justice Department mentioned.
He remained in China till this week, DOJ mentioned, when he scheduled a shuttle to San Francisco.
