Florida State University is celebrating the 60th anniversary of FSU’s integration with two occasions that acknowledge the milestones of previous college students and focus on the affect of integration on its campuses.
The 60th Anniversary of Integration Recognition Ceremony explores FSU’s historical past via the lens of integration and inclusion and will happen on the Integration Statue.
Following the ceremony, FSU student-led initiative the Power of We, joined by the Division of Student Affairs, will host the seventh-annual “The Longest Table” occasion, which focuses on bringing collectively people of differing backgrounds for conversations that encourage change and promote unity on campus.
The 60th Anniversary of Integration Recognition Ceremony will happen at 4:45 p.m. on Thursday, Nov. 17 on the Integration Statue Plaza adopted by the “The Longest Table” occasion at 6 p.m within the Student Union Grand Ballroom.
The Integration Statue depicts Maxwell Courtney, who in 1969 turned the primary African American to graduate from FSU earlier than occurring to earn a grasp’s diploma. In addition to Maxwell, the statue depicts siblings Fred and Doby Lee Flowers, who shared an distinctive yr in 1970 when Fred turned the college’s first African American athlete as a pitcher for the baseball crew and Doby turned FSU’s first African American homecoming queen.
