Famous Oklahoma Native American ballerinas to be on $1 coin

TULSA, Okla. — The U.S. Mint will launch a brand new line of $1 cash in 2023 that includes recognition of Oklahoma’s famed “Five Moons” Native American ballerinas.

Maria Tallchief, thought of America’s first main prima ballerina, will be featured together with a nod to others who achieved worldwide recognition within the twentieth century. Tallchief’s youthful sister Marjorie Tallchief, Yvonne Chouteau, Rosella Hightower and Moscelyne Larkin spherical out the Five Moons.

The historic dancers are a staple on the Tulsa Historical Society’s Vintage Garden at Woodward Park within the type of its Five Moons statues.

The cash’ “heads” aspect will retain the central determine “Sacagawea” carrying her son, Jean Baptiste. The “tails” aspect options Maria Tallchief and a lunar motif with 4 ballerinas within the background.
