Derek Mason resigns as Oklahoma State DC, to take college football coaching sabbatical

Oklahoma State defensive coordinator Derek Mason introduced Thursday by way of social media that he would step away from college football on the conclusion of his present contract with the Cowboys. Mason indicated that he wouldn’t serve on employees with this system for the 2023 season.

Mason is most well-known for seven-season tenure at Vanderbilt, during which he led the Commodores to two bowl appearances. Vanderbilt hired Mason ahead of the 2014 season, as the former Stanford defensive coordinator arrived in Nashville, Tennessee, to replace outgoing head coach James Franklin, who left for Penn State. Over his seven seasons with the Commodores, Mason led the program to a record of 27-55 overall and 10-46 in the SEC. Vanderbilt fired Mason in November 2020, shortly before the end of the program’s first winless season in history.

First-year Auburn coach Bryan Harsin hired Mason ahead of the 2021 season, after which Mason left for the same job at Oklahoma State under Gundy.
