Couple killed at their Florida senior living community, person of interest in custody


A husband and spouse in their 80s have been murdered in their residence at a Florida retirement neighborhood in what the police known as a “random crime,” and a feminine person of interest is now in custody.

Darryl Getman, 83, and Sharon Getman, 80, have been “enjoying their golden years of retirement” at Waterman Village in Mount Dora, Mount Dora Interim Police Chief Mike Gibson stated at a news convention Tuesday.

But “the golden years of Darryl and Sharon were tragically cut short by a ruthless and senseless double homicide,” he stated.

Gibson was choked up as he informed reporters, “I retired once. I think about those golden years. So this, I do take this personal.”

On Dec. 31, a involved neighbor noticed the Getmans’ storage door open and known as safety, in response to police. Security responded and located the couple lifeless.

A girl has since been discovered driving the Getmans’ automobile and has been taken into custody in one other state on automobile theft prices, the chief stated.

Gibson, who didn’t launch the girl’s identify, stated she is a person of interest in the homicides.

Police haven’t launched a motive or how the Getmans have been killed.

That girl was first seen at the retirement complicated at about 3 p.m. on Dec. 30 and was escorted out by safety, police stated.

At about 4:14 p.m. on Dec. 30, the girl was caught on safety digicam again at the complicated, police stated.

At about 10:58 p.m. on Dec. 30, the person of interest entered the complicated once more and went to an condo (not the Getmans’), knocked on the door and requested the resident if she may take a bathe, in response to Gibson.

The tenant “panicked” and hit her alarm button to alert safety and police, Gibson stated. The person of interest requested the resident if she known as 911, and when she responded sure, the girl “took off,” and on her approach out, she allegedly grabbed keys to the tenant’s automobile and mailbox, Gibson stated. Officers responded however couldn’t discover the girl, in response to police.

At 2:02 a.m. on Dec. 31, the Getmans’ automobile was seen leaving the retirement facility, police stated.

About 10 or 11 minutes later, the person of interest walked to the complicated however safety would not let her in, Gibson stated. Security adopted her to the sting of property after which “lost sight of her,” Gibson stated.

The Getmans’ youngsters, Anthony and Brittany Getman, stated in an announcement launched by the police division: “We are stunned, devastated and heartbroken by the horrific murder of our parents.”

“Mom and Dad had been residents of Mount Dora for over 20 years and truly loved the area,” they stated. “They were enjoying their golden years staying active and spending time with their many friends.”

The siblings added that they “have every confidence” in the police and “look forward to a successful resolution.”

“We are shocked and saddened by the recent deaths of our residents which are currently under investigation,” Waterman Village stated in an announcement Tuesday. “We are cooperating fully with the law enforcement authorities and have additional police presence on property during this time.
