College football odds, picks, predictions for Aug. 27, 2022: Advanced computer model fading Illinois in Week 0

Before all FBS teams take the field in the first week of September, the last week of August will see nearly two dozen squads begin their 2022 college football seasons. There are 11 games in the Week 0 college football schedule, which takes place on Saturday, Aug. 27 and includes three conference matchups. Big Ten foes Nebraska and Northwestern will face off in the week’s only Power-5 matchup, with the Cornhuskers listed as 13-point favorites. Those Week 0 college football odds come courtesy of Caesars Sportsbook, and the over/under for that game is set at 50.5.

Elsewhere, Conference USA will showcase two games: Charlotte vs. FAU (-7) and North Texas vs. UTEP (pick’em). Top college football predictions for Aug. 27, 2022

One of the top college football picks the model is recommending for Saturday: Wyoming (+10) stays within the number versus Illinois in a 4 p.m. ET matchup on Sunday. The Cowboys are coming off a 7-6 season and a bowl win despite not having stability at the quarterback position. Both Sean Chambers and Levi Williams saw roughly equal playing time, but both transferred in the offseason. Wyoming also had an incoming transfer at the position in former Andrew Peasley, who came over from Utah State.

Peasley offers dual-threat abilities and should complement Titus Swen in the Cowboys backfield. Swen averaged 92.2 rushing yards over his last five games of 2021, despite being a backup during that stretch. He and Peasley should relish facing an Illini defense that was gashed for nearly 400 rushing yards versus Wisconsin last year.

The defense’s struggles in that game, somewhat, overshadowed Illinois’ struggles on the other side of the ball all season. Of the 130 FBS teams, just 14 of them averaged fewer points per game than the Fighting Illini who will be hoping their own incoming QB transfer kick starts the offense. But former Syracuse quarterback Tommy DeVito is just 4-9 over his last 13 starts and will have to match up against a Wyoming defense that was No. 13 against the pass last year, ranking just one spot behind national champion Georgia.

The model foresees a low-scoring game which plays into the hands of Wyoming. It has the Cowboys (+10) falling by just a touchdown, and thus covering in almost 60% of simulations. See which other teams the model likes here.
