Cedar Park LGBTQ+ Pride event postponed due to threats over drag queens

CEDAR PARK, Texas (KXAN) – A LGBTQ+ Pride event, firstly scheduled to be hung on June 24 in a Cedar Park Starbucks, was once postponed and can be reimagined due to a number of “threatening” calls made to the industry concerning the event’s drag performances.

In a observation to KXAN, Starbucks mentioned that as a result of the threatening voicemails and up to date violence in Cedar Park, the event was once moved to August to coincide with Austin’s LGBTQ+ Pride occasions. A Starbucks spokesperson mentioned they plan on making the longer term event larger and extra available to the Cedar Park neighborhood.


The violence referenced through Starbucks was once the homicide of 24-year-old Akira Ross, who was once fatally shot June 2 at a Cedar Park gasoline station whilst together with her female friend and good friend. Ross’ friends and family have known as for her homicide to be investigated as a hate crime.

The supervisor of the Starbucks named the event “Coffee and Drag Queens” — prior to the postponement, he sought after to host the event to “raise awareness for an art form that is under attack.”

With recognition comes hate

Maeve Haven and Alysha Pretty had been appearing in drag for ten and 7 years, respectively, and as a duo for 5. They mentioned since they began to do drag, the artwork shape has turn out to be a lot more mainstream.

But because it has won recognition, so has the outspoken hatred, they mentioned.

“I mean, drag is everywhere, which, unfortunately, makes it an easier target for people to discriminate against us,” Alysha Pretty mentioned.

The duo mentioned that some performances that includes drag queens are supposed for audiences of every age whilst others, like ones in bars, are intended for adults. They mentioned the Starbucks efficiency would had been an all-ages event.

Amid the rise in critics, each queens said that drag continues to be a significant artwork shape to many within the LGBTQ+ neighborhood.

“[Drag] really inspires people. When people come to our shows, there are countless times where people message us afterward or come up to us and talk to us and just be like, ‘I needed this tonight,’” Maeve Haven mentioned. “I think that’s something that really brings joy to my heart.”
