Biden campaign to advertise in key battleground states during Thanksgiving football opener

We’re still nearly a full year from the 2024 presidential general election, but the Democratic Joe Biden campaign is taking advantage of a big television audience on Thanksgiving Day to air ads in the biggest television markets of two key Midwest battleground states.

The Biden-Harris team will air two different ads in the Detroit and Milwaukee markets as the Green Bay Packers take on the Detroit Lions on Fox, beginning at 12:30 p.m. Eastern time.  Those are the two biggest TV markets in Michigan and Wisconsin, respectively.

The game is expected to reach 1.1. million adults over the age of 35 and 850,000 households in the Detroit market alone, according to a press release from the Biden for President campaign. They’re part of a 16-week, $25 million advertising campaign that the Biden-Harris team says will reach key voters in battleground states.

Recent public opinion surveys show that Biden is trailing both former President Donald Trump and former South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley in hypothetical one-on-one matchups in Michigan. Biden does better than Trump in Wisconsin, but not against Haley or Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis in the Badger State.

An Epic/MRA poll released on Sunday shows Haley leading Biden by 11 points, 47%-36%.  Trump leads Biden in that poll by 5 points, 46%-41%.

And a NY Times/Sienna College survey released on Nov. 12 has Haley up by Biden by 10 points, 45%-35%. Trump is up by Biden in that poll by 5 points, 48%-43%. Biden is tied with DeSantis, 42%-42%.

A Marquette Law School Poll survey from Nov. 8 found Biden leading Trump, 50%-48%. However, the poll shows the president losing to both DeSantis and Haley there: DeSantis leads Biden, 50%-48%, while Haley has a 53%-44% lead.

And in the NY Times/Sienna College survey from Nov. 12, Biden is up over Trump, 47%-45%. But DeSantis leads Biden there, 48%-44%, and Haley has a huge, 13-point lead over Biden, 52%-39%.

There are two other nationally televised NFL games on Thursday, but none of the teams in those games hail from battleground states. (On top of Michigan and Wisconsin, those battleground states include Pennsylvania, Arizona, Nevada, North Carolina and Georgia.)

At 4:30 p.m., the Washington Commanders play the Dallas Cowboys. D.C. is a traditional Democratic stronghold, while Texas is a solid red state.

And the nightcap game features teams from two blue states: the San Francisco 49ers at the Seattle Seahawks.

California has voted for a Democrat for president every year since 1992, while Washington has been a solid blue state since 1988, according to Ballotpedia.
