Beer belly wrestling, ‘evading arrest’ obstacle on tap for Florida Man Games

The competitions are themed consistent with the phenomenon referred to as “Florida Man.”

ST. AUGUSTINE, Fla. — It ain’t the Olympics, however a gaggle of Floridians plan to host competitions themed consistent with the collective antics of the beer-loving, gator-possessing, rap-sheet heavy, mullet-wearing social media phenomenon referred to as “Florida Man.”

Organizers of the “Florida Man Games” describe the contest as “the most insane athletic showdown on Earth.” The video games will poke a laugh at Florida’s recognition for generating extraordinary news tales involving weapons, medicine, booze and reptiles — or some aggregate of the 4.

Among the contests deliberate for subsequent February in St. Augustine, Florida, consistent with organizers, are the Evading Arrest Obstacle Course during which contestants leap over fences and thru yards whilst being chased by way of actual law enforcement officials; the Category 5 Cash Grab during which contributors attempt to grasp as a lot cash in a wind-blowing sales space; and the self-explanatory beer-belly wrestling.

“This isn’t just a competition; it’s a one-of-a-kind Floridian spectacle!” organizers mentioned on the video games’ web page.

The “Florida Man” thought crept into the country’s awareness a decade in the past with the @_FloridaMan Twitter account. The account, with the tagline “Real-life stories of the world’s worst superhero,” has been house to headlines equivalent to “Florida Man Fire Bombs Garage That Impounded His Car, Hits His Own Vehicle” and “Florida Man Tried to Pay for McDonald’s With Weed.”

General admission tickets to the development are going for $45. Two former stars of the Nineties tv display “American Gladiators” have agreed to function referees.

A St. Augustine resident is in the back of the video games: Pete Melfi, proprietor of The 904 Now, a media outlet protecting St. Johns County.

“We thought, ‘How can we really play on these Florida Man headlines that we hear so much about?’ Someone gave me the idea to make it into an athletic competition,” Melfi informed the Orlando Sentinel. “It’s going to be a wild day of mud games and Florida-style obstacle courses. It’s going to really be an opportunity to live that Florida Man life for a day.”
