Anonymous donor pays tab for East Texas college graduates


Officials at Wiley College in East Texas say college students graduating from the traditionally Black college have been advised at their graduation ceremony that an nameless donor had paid their balances

MARSHALL, Texas — Students graduating from a traditionally Black college in East Texas have been advised at their graduation ceremony that an nameless donor had paid their balances, officers stated.

Wiley College stated in a news launch that over 100 college students have been gathered for commencement Saturday when the varsity’s president made the announcement.

“We are constantly communicating with donors to assist students in these ways so that they can begin their after-college experience with less debt,” Herman J. Felton Jr., Wiley’s president and CEO, stated within the news launch.

The college stated within the news launch that the estimated complete for the balances owed to the college by the graduating class of 2022 was about $300,000.

The 2007 film “The Great Debaters” starring Denzel Washington was impressed by debate in 1935 by which Wiley prevailed over the University of Southern California’s nationally-known, powerhouse group at a time when the nation was closely segregated.
