AAA tests what happens when drivers don’t take control over semi-autonomous vehicles during potential accident

MIAMI – Andy Slye owns a Tesla and highlights the car’s expertise on his YouTube channel. One of his favourite options is Autopilot, which permits the automobile to speed up, brake and steer by itself.

“It gives you an extra set of eyes, and more peace of mind and, from the four years I’ve been using it, it has completely changed the way I drive,” Slye mentioned.

The automobile’s expertise even helped him keep away from an accident with a tractor trailer.

“Autopilot actually hit the brakes so it could have been bad and luckily I had autopilot enabled at that time.”

But AAA needed to see what happens when the driving force does not take control during a potential accident and depends solely on the car’s expertise.

Researchers examined three fashions with semi-autonomous options. In 15 take a look at runs when the car adopted a dummy bike rider, no accidents occurred. But when the bike crossed visitors, the vehicles hit the bike during one third of tests. The vehicles additionally carried out poorly when confronted with a head on collision. There was an accident each time. Only one mannequin slowed down earlier than making affect.

“We are not at fully autonomous yet and I think a lot of consumers are confused and think that when they have these systems that the vehicle can drive itself, and that’s just not the case,” mentioned Megan McKernan, a researcher with AAA.

McKernan believes the expertise is enhancing and may save lives however will not be idiot proof.

“Never rely on these systems. They are meant to help assist, but they are never meant to replace an attentive driver,” Mckernan mentioned.
