8 people killed in head-on crash near Batesville, including human smuggling suspect, DPS says


A human smuggling suspect and 7 others, including some migrants, had been killed in a head-on crash near Batesville, consistent with the Texas Dept. of Public Safety.

The crash came about round 6:34 a.m., Wednesday, on US-57 in Zavala County, near Batesville.

DPS officers mentioned a Honda coming from Houston used to be believed to be concerned in human smuggling.

The motive force, believed to be the human smuggling suspect, used to be heading eastbound and used to be seeking to escape from Zavala deputies when he handed an 18-wheeler in a no-passing zone, DPS officers mentioned.

The Honda then crashed head-on with a Chevy SUV and led to the car to head up in flames.

The motive force and passenger of the SUV, — 67-year-old Jose Lerma and 65-year-old Isabel Lerma, each from Georgia, died from their accidents, officers mentioned.

Authorities mentioned six people throughout the Honda, including the motive force, had been killed in the crash.
