14-year-old arrested for Lyman High School social media threat, deputies say

SEMINOLE COUNTY, Fla. – A 14-year-old has been arrested for allegedly making a social media threat through Snapchat at Lyman High School. 

According to deputies, the teen was arrested Monday evening on a felony charge of making a false report concerning the use of firearms in a violent manner. 

On Monday, a heightened security presence was at Lyman High School Monday following the threat to the school that was posted on social media, Seminole County Schools shared in a message to families.

According to police, officers with the Longwood Police Department were notified by school officials of a possible threat made on Snapchat shortly before 7:30 p.m.

Law enforcement began an investigation into the post and was able to identify the student who created the social media post and determined there was no credible threat. 

“While the threat was deemed to be non-credible, the intent to disrupt the campus is unacceptable. Appropriate disciplinary and legal action will be applied,” the district said in a statement. 

Police said there is no basis for a criminal investigation at this time. 

This school threat comes after a “cruel prank” led to a scare at Mainland High School in Volusia County last Friday. The Daytona Beach Police Department said Sunday in a lengthy Facebook post it will be filing charges against the students allegedly involved. 

They also recommend to the district that those students be expelled.
