What is wind chill? What makes cold temps feel even colder

DALLAS — The wind chill is how cold it feels when the wind is considered.

How many occasions have you ever stepped outdoors on a cold day and mentioned, “It is not so bad out here, but the wind!”

That is the wind chill. It could make bearable days nearly depressing and even harmful!

That is why a Wind Chill Advisory is in place for North Texas Thursday via Friday morning because the coldest air of 2022 settles in.

Why it issues:
The cold wind chills may end in hypothermia if precautions should not taken.

The human physique loses warmth via convection. This warmth usually stays near the pores and skin. That layer of heat is used to maintain the physique heat.

When the wind picks up, that layer of heat is whisked away and not insulating the physique. The stronger the wind, the faster it removes that layer of heat. If the wind is very cold and robust, the physique’s warmth loss is sped up.

That is why it is essential to cowl uncovered pores and skin. The jackets, hats and gloves hold that layer of insulation the human physique naturally creates near the physique.
