Tribal leaders, experts respond to Oklahoma v. Castro-Huerta ruling


The current U.S. Supreme Court resolution that states have some authority on tribal lands not granted by Congress raised widespread alarm throughout Indian Country. Now tribal leaders and lecturers are strategizing the most effective methods to push again by coverage, priority and public opinion.

Justices dominated June 29 that Oklahoma and different states can pursue legal expenses in opposition to non-Native defendants accused of harming Native Americans on tribal lands. The 5-4 resolution, authored by Justice Brett Kavanaugh, invokes state constitutional rights and bucks long-standing priority that Congress determines state powers on tribal lands.
