Series of winter storms hits Oklahoma 35 years ago

35 years ago, Oklahoma endured a sequence of winter storms that resulted in flooding, energy outages and $10 million in damages.

According to the Oklahoma Climatological Survey, the storms ranged from mid-December 1987 by way of early January 1988, and included:

Dec. 13-15, 1987: 8-14 inches of snow in northwest half of state, drifting as much as 4 ft.

Dec. 25-27, 1987: Intense ice storm from Duncan to Norman to Tulsa and on to Miami left 75,000 houses with out energy, together with some with energy outages lasting per week. Ice accumulations of 1-2 inches on energy traces and bushes led to $10 million in damages. Flooding occurred on rivers simply southeast of the ice storm.

Jan. 5-7, 1988: 10 inches of snow throughout most of Oklahoma, with some areas receiving 16-18 inches. Rooftop drifts of 2-3 ft precipitated in depth harm.

In Tulsa particularly, the National Weather Service reported 11 inches for the whole month of January 1988, with 8.6 inches on Jan. 6 alone.
