21 dead, 18 injured after bus falls off overpass near Venice, Italy

The bus was once sporting passengers to a campsite in Marghera, police stated.

A bus crash in Mestre, a suburb near Venice, and on Italy’s mainland, left 21 lifeless and 18 injured on Tuesday, in keeping with Italian officers.

The bus, which was once sporting passengers to a campsite in Marghera, fell off of an overpass, police said on X, the platform previously referred to as Twitter. The twist of fate took place within the Mestre and Marghera neighboring districts of Italy, near the town of Venice.

Many of the injured, who have been rescued in an evacuation operation which lasted till 9:30 p.m. native time, have been indexed as code purple, indicating they have been in essential situation. The 18 injured passengers have been taken to 5 hospitals in Veneto, officers stated.

“A huge tragedy struck our community this evening,” Mayor of Venice, Luigi Brugnaro, stated in a post on X after the crash. “I immediately ordered the city to mourn, in memory of numerous victims who were on the fallen bus.”

European Union Commission President Ursula von der Leyen presented her “condolences to the families of the victims and those injured in the serious accident in Mestre,” in a post on X Monday evening.

Italian President Sergio Mattarella also referred to as the Mayor of Venice Luigi Brugnaro “to express his condolences for the very serious tragedy of Mestre,” the reliable account of the Italian president posted on X.

The twist of fate impacted the native railway community, shutting it down for a time, although products and services have been later restored, officers stated. Traffic within the space was once impacted, in keeping with a post on X from the City of Venice.

“The operations to secure the area will last all night,” the City of Venice stated within the post.
