TAHLEQUAH – Cherokee Nation residents Laura Dishman and Bill Hickman have been appointed to vacant seats on the Cherokee Nation Businesses Board of Directors in December.
“This is a tremendous opportunity for me,” Dishman stated. “I pledge to do my very best.”
On Dec. 12, members of the Tribal Council unanimously handed resolutions confirming their nominations.
“Both of them are extraordinary nominees to the board,” Tribal Councilor Keith Austin stated. “They bring true value. I’m very impressed with both of these.”
Dishman and Hickman had addressed members of the Rules Committee earlier within the day. Tribal Council Speaker Mike Shambaugh described them as “two good candidates who were very prepared today.”
“It made our job easy,” he added.
Dishman, of Jay, helps run her household’s Delaware County firm referred to as Grand River Abstract & Title Co.
“My parents purchased the company back in 1968,” she stated. “My father worked in the company along with us until he passed away in 2008. Since that time, my mother and I have continued to operate the company together.”
She added that her firm has been licensed with the Cherokee Nation’s Tribal Employment Rights Office for 15 years.
“We are very proud of our heritage,” Dishman stated. “We employ several Cherokee citizens.”
When requested what she brings to the desk, Dishman pointed to her a long time’ value of expertise serving to run a profitable enterprise.
“I have a passion for business,” she stated. “We’ve been through a couple of recessions and now even a pandemic. So I think the experience I’ve gained from that and from being in the real estate world, as well as my passion for our community … I hope that I can add value to the board.”
Shambaugh, one among Dishman’s supporters, stated he’s recognized her household for years.
“The one thing that makes them stand out to me a lot is their involvement in the community,” Shambaugh stated. “When there’s things that need fundraisers … they’re always there. Our child advocacy center, they’re very big on supporting that.”
Hickman, of Norman, is a veteran of the U.S. Air Force who’s at present an lawyer.
“I attended the University of Oklahoma College of Law,” he stated. “I was blessed and had the ability to finish No. 1 in my class … and I’ve been in private practice for nearly 20 years. In private practice, I mostly consider myself a business attorney. I represent large and small businesses doing mergers and transactional-type work, as well as litigation.”
Hickman stated he additionally represents instructional establishments and non-profit organizations.
