Texas roper bests Clovis’ Mayfield again


LAS VEGAS, Nev. – Texas roper Caleb Smidt moved somewhat nearer to his fourth world championship on Thursday evening on the National Finals Rodeo.

Clovis’ Shad Mayfield, who got here into the NFR in first place amongst tie-down ropers, completed sixth in Thursday’s eighth spherical, wrapping up his calf in 8.6 seconds. But Smidt completed fourth on Thursday, with an 8.0 time.

Mayfield tied a Thomas & Mack Center document by successful Tuesday’s sixth spherical in 6.5 seconds, and he’s completed within the cash 3 times this NFR.

But Smidt has been the definition of consistency, incomes prize cash in all eight NFR rounds to this point.

Through Thursday, Smidt has earned $300,586 for the season to steer the world standings. Mayfield, who gained the world championship in 2020, is in second place with $269,936.
