Rare fall streak clouds, that are also called gap punch clouds, had been captured above Central Texas on Thursday.

Like one thing out of an alien film, huge, spherical punctures eerily appeared in clouds above Central Texas on Thursday. The City of New Braunfels shared a photograph on Facebook of three spaced out cloud circles, likening them to UFO’s in the caption. In the feedback, others shared their very own pictures of they captured of the strange clouds. “I’m not saying it’s aliens, but… it’s aliens,” commented Randy Simbro.
“Recess entertainment today, my 4th graders refuse to believe they were not UFOs,” wrote Kristi Miller Leineweber. “Omg we are so closed yall you need to go back home!” wrote Jennifer Nicole Devilbliss. Others commenting in contrast the clouds to COVID-19 particles and included GIFs from Jordan Peele’s 2022 sci-fi horror film Nope. In a separate publish on Twitter, Kaitlin Wright, a meteorologist for WCCB in Charlotte, N.C. shared pictures despatched to her from Texas resident Tiffany Dirks displaying a rainbow showing in the center of one of many clouds.
As out of worldly as they appear, the rare sky phenomenon is not brought on by UFO’s or aliens. Per the National Weather Service (NWS), they’re really generally known as a fallstreak clouds, or gap punch clouds. The uncommon cloud formation, which seems as giant round or elliptical gaps in mid-to high-level cirrocumulus or altocumulus clouds, happens when tiny “supercooled” water droplets in the clouds suddenly evaporates or freezes.
As the droplets develop and grow to be heavier, they start to fall. A gap is left behind, which can increase outward as neighboring droplets begin to freeze, NWS explains. Airplanes passing via the cloud layer can even set off the droplets to show into tiny ice crystals, as air across the aircraft’s wings and physique expands and cools.
