NEW YORK — Sandy Alderson will step down as president of the New York Mets when the staff finds his substitute.

The 74-year-old Alderson, a most cancers survivor who has served two stints as New York’s basic supervisor, will transfer to a brand new function as special advisor to house owners Steve and Alex Cohen and the senior management staff.
