Moto GP rider Aleix Espargaro was in tears as he threw away a place on the podium at the Catalan Grand Prix – after stopping early pondering the race had completed.
The 32-year-old racer was in second place when he sat upright and started waving to followers in the crowd, leaving the commentators and his Aprilia crew in the pits in disbelief.
The Spaniard shortly realised his mistake however sadly he’d already dropped right down to fifth and out of a podium place.
Aleix Espargaro threw away a high three end after pondering the race had already ended
The BT Sport commentary crew initially presumed there was a technical error for Espargaro’s cease, as Prima Pramac Racing’s Jorge Martin overtook the Spaniard with ease on the closing lap.
The Aprilia rider started waving to the crowd earlier than recognizing different riders flying previous him and shortly re-joining the race in fifth place.
His crew down in the pits have been seen with their arms on their heads, earlier than Espargaro was proven in tears again in his field after coming to phrases along with his mistake.

Speaking after the race, Espargaro took possession over the blunder and mentioned he wants to look at his ‘folks, not the tower’ in future.
The Aprilia rider mentioned: ‘It was my fault, I did a massive mistake. The very first thing is to express regret to my crew.
‘I had no time to see the lap and so I watched the tower. It was my mistake. I’ve to look at my folks, not the tower.’
Reigning world champion Fabio Quartararo cruised to an inch-perfect victory in the Catalan Grand Prix with Jorge Martin and Johann Zarco finishing the podium.
