ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (AP) – The U.S. government says it’ll protect two populations of a rare prairie bird that’s found in components of the Midwest, together with one of many nation’s most prolific oil and fuel fields.
The lesser prairie rooster’s vary covers a portion of the oil-rich Permian Basin alongside the New Mexico-Texas line, and extends into components of Colorado, Oklahoma and Kansas.
The bird’s habitat has diminished about 90% from historical levels. Officials say the prairies the place the birds stay are in peril as they get damaged up and developed.
