Edited excerpts from the interview:

How has your preparation for the tour been, and what are you trying ahead to?
I used to be born and raised in Mumbai. Once an Indian, at all times an Indian. The cloth of India is at all times on my pores and skin, and soul. My work is at all times consultant of the issues that I’ve learnt from my motherland, my ancestors, and gurus. When I got here to America, I needed to maintain that identification alive, as a result of I used to be so happy with it. I didn’t need to lose my roots, which I beloved dearly. That is what helped me pave the way in which to [success]. Without my roots, I’d be misplaced. Classical people, thumris, and ghazals, are all a part of my DNA. For this leg, we start with a live performance in Mumbai. I’ll [perform] the music that has nurtured me. We then transfer to Ahmedabad, Pune, and Goa, and return for one other live performance in Mumbai. Over 20 days, we can have 5 performances. I may also conduct just a few masterclasses. All the fabric for the live performance shall be [music] from my albums. There are thumri, kajaris, and acoustic songs. And then, there shall be some Bollywood music as nicely.

Having been nominated for the Grammys over time, how has your music advanced, and the way was that change instrumental in your win this yr?
It all began after I turned a mom, and noticed my son struggling to grasp his identification in America. [My album] Falu’s Bazaar was my effort in telling him how unique he’s. My second album, A Colourful World, explored a much bigger matter — it stemmed from the dying of George Floyd. My baby was eight, and the kids in America have been scared. Children of color can fear [about] being killed by a cop. I needed to put in writing an album for all the kids. Colouring is an enormous a part of our lives. My concept was to ascertain that when all colors of a [pack of] crayons can stay collectively peacefully, individuals of all colors can achieve this too if we don’t bask in battle. I suppose, because it addressed a world [subject], it spoke to everybody.

As somebody who has put Indian music on the worldwide map, do you have got any recommendations for Indian musicians?
Everyone’s journey is completely different. I’ve had gurus instructing me w ell — telling me what a raga or ghazal is. Some individuals might not have entry to the legendary academics that I had entry to. If you don’t have it, you have to go deep into your examine. A musician should consider in his or her music.
